From a photograph I shot in Madaba, Jordan.
Authority without domination
A Martin Luther King Jr. Day antidote to the mad, infant-tyrant king archetype that we live under. A few years back, I met King Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, ruler of the Kingdom of Ashanti / Ghana – while filming for Novica. We were presented to him in a public ceremony and private audience. Can’t describe the electric charge I felt when I stood in front of him. I instantly knew what a king was: authority without domination, to borrow a phrase from the novel, Shibumi. A leader exists to serve the people, never his or her own interests.

Today’s trip: scraping by on Vine St.
I believe we take a trip – a journey – each time we exit the front door.

A recycler’s haul. Vine Street, Hollywood.
To those who are just scraping by – hang in there. We’re all rooting for you.
