From a photograph I shot in Madaba, Jordan.
A Martin Luther King Jr. Day antidote to the mad, infant-tyrant king archetype that we live under. A few years back, I met King Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, ruler of the Kingdom of Ashanti / Ghana – while filming for Novica. We were presented to him in a public ceremony and private audience. Can’t describe the electric charge I felt when I stood in front of him. I instantly knew what a king was: authority without domination, to borrow a phrase from the novel, Shibumi. A leader exists to serve the people, never his or her own interests.

This video card is dedicated to dear friend Scott MacDonald Taylor who has deepened my understanding of Japanese culture. To the Fujisan that lives in Scott’s heart — gratitude.
I believe we take a trip – a journey – each time we exit the front door.
